Statement of Philosophy
The Christopher Donovan Day School Inc. (CDDS) strives to provide a positive learning experience where each student achieves their true learning potential.
The CDDS offers academic and life skills instruction to language disabled students, within a safe, nurturing environment. The Christopher Donovan Day School Inc. follows the Massachusetts Department of Education mandated curriculum framework and has adopted Carver Public Schools curriculum benchmarks. In addition, the CDDS offers differentiated classrooms, in which teachers begin where students are currently performing. The staff utilizes a multi sensory instructional approach to accommodate various learning styles. Maintaining low teacher to student ratios allows the CDDS to address the unique needs of each individual.
The cognitive-constructivist view is utilized when constructing individualized academic plans. Cognitive constructivism is based on the work of Swiss developmental psychologist Jean Piaget. Piaget's theory has two major parts: an "ages and stages" component that predicts what children can and cannot understand at different ages, and a theory of development that describes how children develop cognitive abilities. Piaget's theory of cognitive development proposes that humans cannot be "given" information which they immediately understand and use. Instead, humans must "construct" their own knowledge. They build their knowledge through experience. Experiences enable them to create schemas - mental models in their heads. There are two key Piagetian principles for teaching and learning; Learning is an active process and learning should be whole, authentic and real.
In addition to academics, individualized programs include pragmatic, sensory motor, behavior management, and life skills. The CDDS considers the social/emotional development as well as the academic development when constructing and implementing individualized programs.
The CDDS utilizes the Crisis Prevention Institute, Inc. Nonviolent Crisis Intervention model. Understanding effective communication and factors associated with behaviors, coupled with the core philosophy of maintaining care, welfare, safety, and security, provides a balance in behavior management as well as academics.
It is the mission of the Christopher Donovan Day School Inc. to work collaboratively with families, schools, and communities, to ensure students learn the skills required to succeed in the world.
